Eco-Warriors Stress the Need for Reducing Waste

The 73rd Independence Day celebrations at DLF Public School took off with a warm spirit of patriotism predominant in every heart, as they saluted the tricolour. The fervour was vivid and visible during an Inter-House Patriotic Dance Competition, adjudged by the school alumnae Nikita Bharti, class of 2015 and Chandragupta Chatterjee, class of 2010, the guests for the day along with Principal Seema Jerath. The event also offered an opportunity to the students of the school to be the agents of change, as they pledged to support the school’s resolution, The Reduce Revolution- a move towards zero waste. Young Delfites of Grades IV and V were happy to have dustbin free classrooms as a move towards minimising their classroom waste.  In a bid to create a garbage free culture, the school has consciously placed degradable and bio-degradable waste bins at vital points. After a successful pilot in Classes IV and V, the school eco-warriors were all geared up to cascade the waste management initiative to their peers. Ghazipur dump, Delhi’s biggest landfill, spread over an area of 29 acres, is staring in the face of the city. Currently standing 65 metres tall, just 8 metres less than that of Qutub Minar’s height, the mountain will be more than 75 metres tall by 2020 — taller than Taj Mahal. About 2,000 tonnes of garbage dumped in this landfill yard every day is leading to toxic air and soil, the impact of which would be disastrous for everyone.  In light of this, students of the school urged citizens to join in their mission of managing waste by reducing it. Principal Seema Jerath while encouraging everyone to join the school’s Independence Day Resolution stressed that an idea can change the world provided it is supported by a good number of proactive individuals who are determined to bring about the change’.
